Flooded Brisbane Street in 1890

Our next event is a seminar about Brisbane floods in the 50th year since the devastating flood in January 1974. After three weeks of continual rain, the Brisbane River broke its banks and flooded the surrounding areas. The cyclone that produced the flood also flooded Ipswich, Beenleigh, and the Gold Coast. In total, there were 16 fatalities, 300 people injured, 8,000 homes destroyed, 13,000 properties impacted and an estimated $980 million in damage.

There will be three speakers: Margaret Cooke author of ‘River with a City Problem’, will speak about all things flood related. Lisa Jones, Curator of the Queensland Police Museum, will weave a tale about how the Queensland Police handled the 1974 flood, and Christine Ianna, Museum Conservator, will tell you how to protect your family treasures from flooding and the steps to take after the water has receded.

The two-and-a-half hour presentation will begin at 11.10am on Sunday 28 April and will provide educational content suitable for any audience.

The Museum opens its doors to the public on the last Sunday of each month from 10am to 3pm from February to November in addition to the standard Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm opening hours. Monthly Sunday openings feature guest speakers from across the historical and crime-solving spectrums.

PLEASE NOTE: The Police Museum will open Sunday 28 April from 10am to 3pm and is located on the ground floor of Police Headquarters, 200 Roma Street, Brisbane.
